Two new tourism facilities to be opened in Jamaica next week

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica – Prime Minister Bruce Golding says there will be a major boost to tourism with the opening next week of two new facilities.

In his New Year Message, Mr. Golding said the Port of Falmouth will receive its first cruise ship on January 7 and the Montego Bay Convention Centre will be officially declared open.

“Construction of the new Port of Falmouth is virtually complete and it will receive its first cruise ship next Friday. Next week, we will officially declare open the new Montego Bay Convention Centre which will enable us to enter the huge market for convention business,” Mr Golding said.

The Port of Falmouth, when complete, will have two berths, one of which can accommodate the largest cruise liners in the world. These liners are more than 300 metres in length and can sleep in excess of 5,000 passengers.

The convention centre will be a boost to Montego Bay as the city will be able to attract large conventions. The centre has 4,880 sq metres of divisible exhibition space; a 1,944 sq metre banquet hall which can seat 2,000 persons; and 1,053 sq metres of divisible meeting room spaces.
