The island of Tobago gets ready for tourism season

SCARBOROUGH, Tobago – With the start of 2009, the island of Tobago is looking forward to providing its visitors with new and improved services and attractions throughout the coming year.

In addition to lush tropical rainforests, boundless sun-kissed beaches, hundreds of species of exotic birds and some of the most spectacular diving in the world, the destination’s burgeoning tourism market will continue to grow with the help of hotel expansions and the addition of new transportation services.

The Tobago House of Assembly has announced the allocation of $2.3 million USD to small boutique hotels as a means of bringing them up to three-star status. In light of the destination’s continued development Mount Irvine Bay Hotel and Golf club (www.mtirvine.com) is investing over $3.1 million USD in renovations and the addition of 35 new rooms. Additional expansion projects include the Crown Point Beach Hotel (www.crownpointbeachhotel.com) adding 25 rooms and the Coco Reef Resort & Spa (www.cocoreef.com) adding 25 luxury suites.

Transportation News

Atlanta-based carrier, Delta Airlines resumed non-stop service to the island on December 20, 2008. With this airlift option, North American visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the destination’s dynamic mix of cultures and eclectic dining experiences (www.delta.com).

In an effort to reduce the effects of motor vehicle emissions and to lessen traffic congestion on the nation’s roadways, the government of Trinidad & Tobago launched the country’s first water-taxi system on December 29, 2008.

To aid in this venture, the government acquired four ferry type vessels that include the Su, the HC Milancia, the HC Katia, the Olivia. The Su has a capacity of 449 passengers with the remaining three ferries holding 150 each. Additionally, Tobago is estimating the island’s highest cruise arrivals, with 61 calls and over 70,000 passengers for the 2008/2009 season.

Upcoming Events

For the past 26 years, Tobago’s regatta has garnered the attention of serious racers and fun-seeking sailors from around the world. Known to many as the “friendliest regatta” in the Caribbean, Tobago’s Carnival Regatta (www.sailweek.com) will take center stage from February 10 –14.

During Lay Day, sailors will no doubt be ready for some competition of a different kind Hula Hoop, Salsa, Limbo, Slip n Slide, to name a few.

Fuelled by the libations from the Angostura Pepsi bar and heckled by the on-lookers, these Landlubber activities will prove that even the most novel sailors can win a prize.

In April, Tobago will be celebrating the 5th Annual Plymouth Jazz Festival. From April 24 – 26, music lovers will enjoy performances from some of the biggest artists.
