St. Lucia appoints New Director of Tourism

CASTRIES, St. Lucia – St Lucia’s former Permanent Secretary Maria C. Fowell was appointed St. Lucia’s Director of Tourism effective August 1, 2006. Ms. Fowell replaces Peter Hilary Modeste who served as Director of Tourism for nine years.

Fowell is well versed in St. Lucia’s tourism industry. She has extensive experience in the hospitality sector, including a brief tenure as Guest & Public Relations Manager at the Rex St. Lucian Hotel. She has also served in multiple positions at the St. Lucia Tourism Board, most recently as that of Deputy Director of Tourism. In 2002, Fowell accepted the role of Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism.

Minister of Tourism Philip J. Pierre expressed confidence in Fowell’s ability to lead the Board into a new and innovative era. “Ms. Fowell brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the role of Director of Tourism for St. Lucia. Ms. Fowell has already proven to be a dynamic and accomplished partner, and I am looking forward to working with her in this new role.”

Fowell expressed similar enthusiasm. “I am pleased to be given the opportunity to serve St. Lucia in the capacity of Director of Tourism. This is a new and exciting personal challenge, and I look forward to working with all industry partners to maximize St. Lucia’s enormous potential as a tourism destination.

Fowell is a former student of the St. Joseph’s Convent and Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Tourism Management (UWI) and a Master’s degree in Marketing from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom. Maria C. Fowell is married with a ten year old daughter.
