BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has called for the continued building of a good and stable nation.
In delivering his 16th Independence Message as Prime Minister to mark the 27th Anniversary of Nationhood, Dr. Douglas thanked God for a thriving and stable democracy.
“Unlike many nations across the face of the earth, we have no political prisoners. We have freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Here in our Federation, there is freedom of movement and freedom of association. Despite our size, we are ranked among the middle-income nations of the world, and every five years, all of us, regardless of political persuasion, together decide into whose hands we will place the management of the state,” said the Prime Minister in a nationwide radio and television broadcast.
Reflecting on the path the twin-island nation has trod since September 19th 1983, Dr. Douglas noted the current challenges and the impact of the global financial and economic crisis.
He told the Nation that he envision the opportunities that are being presented, through strategic planning, with the unfolding of the construction phase of the Social Security Beacon Heights mixed development at Olivees and Dewars and the Coast to Coast Developments Project at the South East Peninsula.
Prime Minister Douglas also mentioned the expansion of the Offshore Education Services Sector at institutions like the University of Medicine and Health Sciences at West Farm and the Windsor University School of Medicine at Brighton Estate as well as the diversification of these services to accommodate new investments in computer software technology and the broadband telecommunications industry.
“ It is very easy to take these socio-political and economic accomplishments for granted but, really, we shouldn’t. Together, we have built a good and stable nation. And when we consider the tumult and travail besetting much of the world, for all of our accomplishments here we should all be both grateful and proud,” said the St. Kitts and Nevis women.
