Sprinter, Kim Collins back on track

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts – Former World and Commonwealth Champion and Caribbean sprint superstar and St.Kitts-Nevis national sporting hero and icon Kim Collins marked his return to the international athletic scene with an impressive victory in the 100 m at the Moscow Cup held in Russia over the weekend. Collins dominated the race, easily defeating Russian favorite Igor Gostev and Ukrainian Dmytro Hlushchenko.

Collins, who skipped last season because of injuries, clocked 10.27 to dominate the race and put some light back in his career as he began his relatively quiet 2007 campaign leading up to a 4th World Championship appearance. The world’s has been good to Collins as he has won a medal in each of the last 3 including a silver in Edmonton in 2001, Gold in Paris in 2003 and a Bronze in Helsinki in 2005.

His goal for the World Championships in Osaka this year? “I want to win the gold medal”, said Kim Collins.

At 30 Kim is still young in ordinary circles but approaching over the hill status in the world of athletics. His possible 2007 world championship appearance will likely be his last.

Kim is regarded by most in International and Caribbean athletics as one of the most successful sprinters ever out of the Caribbean. Collins accolades and achievements includes a World and Commonwealth Championship, a World Championship silver and bronze medal as well as 2 Olympic finals appearances. He also holds the St.Kitts-Nevis and OECS 100m records. He was a former world number 1 ranked sprinter and was in the top ten ranking for most of 2002-2005.
