Sporting contests add Spice and Flavor to Jerk Festival

SUNRISE – Sports enthusiasts attending this year’s Jamaican Jerk Festival, presented by Air Jamaica and Publix, will be delighted to learn that apart from tasty culinary offerings, they will also be treated to a feast of various sporting contests, scheduled to take place at the event on Sunday, November 9, at Markham Park in Sunrise.

Event organizers have orchestrated an action packed sports schedule which promises to be an exciting action-packed day of skill and talent.

Starting at 10 am, its “cricket lovely cricket”, under the expert guidance of South Florida’s premier cricket organization, the South Florida Cricket Alliance.


Cricket – Lovely Cricket

An exciting 20/20 contest pitting the South Florida All Stars versus the Jamaican Jerk Festival All Stars will lead the day’s activities. The match will feature an abundance of talented local cricketers who will certainly delight all on hand as they skillfully exhibit their passion for the grand old game.

At 12 noon the netball matches will begin, showcasing several local teams of various age groups. The marquee match up of the day will see Air Jamaica’s championship team battling a South Florida local team for the right to be the crowned queens of the court.

Soccer, the world’s most popular game, makes its debut into the festival and kicks off at 1pm with what promises to be an exciting opener. The All Star Soccer game will feature a showdown between the Fort Lauderdale Rebels and Air Jamaica’s Business House League team. Both teams will vie for the All Star Sport Trophy in their quest to become the inaugural Jamaican Jerk Festival soccer champions.

For the more laid back, the Western Union Domino Tournament will provide an opportunity for aficionados of the game to vie for cash prizes as well as priceless bragging rights. Traditionally, the domino tournament draws rivaling contestants from various cities who take the game very seriously.

After all the sporting activities are completed, all attention will be turned to the musical performances on the main stage featuring the legendary Byron Lee & the Dragonaires, Chalice, Antiguan Reggae Ambassador, Causion, TOK, Caribbean Music Farm, Sheila Hylton, One Third and Tanika Roberts.

Other activities rounding out the festival includes the Publix Jerk Cook-off, featuring celebrity chefs, Grace Kitchen with demonstrations by dancehall duo Tanto Metro and Devonte, cultural performances on the JN Money Transfer stage and the Grace/Western Union stage and an expansive Kidz Fun Zone for the little ones.

The 7th Annual Jamaican Jerk Festival is presented by Air Jamaica and Publix. Sponsors are County Line Chiropractic Centers, JN Money Transfer, Ting, Grace Foods, Western Union, Hot105 FM, 99Jamz, WAVS 1170 and the National Weekly.
