Republicans Continue Attacking Immigrant Families

MIAMI – On Wednesday, January 14th the U.S. House of Representatives passed amendments to defund the implementation of President Obama’s announced plan to stop deportations through the DAPA and DACA programs. 236 votes in favor and 191 against ensured the passage of the bill with. The votes basically followed party lines, but 10 House Republicans voted against the bill, including South Florida Latino Representatives Mario Diaz-Balart, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Carlos Curbelo.

We commend our Representatives for not taking part in this despicable and selfish political theater that the Republican party is putting out to attack the Administration, without thinking about how this could impact the real life of millions of families and U.S. born children,” states Maria Rodriguez, Executive Director for the Florida Immigrant Coalition. “As the amended bill heads to the Senate, we expect to see Senator Marco Rubio defend his constituents as well and try to use his leadership to stop this nonsense from even being adressed on the Senate floor.

As if that weren’t enough, this Thursday, a district court judge in Texas will hear a lawsuit filed by the attorney generals and governors of 25 states also aimed at blocking Obama’s executive actions on immigration. Unfortunately, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi made sure that the sunshine state was included among the list of states.
