Record Turnout for PanCaribbean Sigma Corporate Run 2010

KINGSTON, Jamaica – A record 11,185 persons registered for the 12th Annual PanCaribbean’s Sigma Corporate Run, which was held in Kingston on Sunday, February 21. The staging saw an increase in the runners, walkers and wheelchair categories taking to the streets of New Kingston for the 5.6 k event which began at the PanCaribbean Building in New Kingston and ended at Emancipation Park.

Over 400 persons registered in the individual and non-corporate groups along with 105 corporate groups supported the initiative which saw the Jamaica Public Service copping the participation award for fielding 606 entrants while Hawkeye Electronics Security took first place in the Corporate T-Shirt Competition.

With Partners, National Health Fund, Sagicor Life Jamaica and Reggae Marathon, this year’s staging raised just over $11Million. These proceeds will be given to the Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre, Jamaica Association for the Deaf and the Jamaica Society for the Blind. Donovan Perkins, President & CEO of Pan Caribbean Financial Services, is pleased with the outcome. “The turnout at this year’s event is just tremendous, last year we had 9,500 registered and we have increased that significantly, that is just tremendous,” Perkins said.

PanCaribbean’s Sigma Corporate Run is a major part of the company’s corporate social responsibility and Mr. Perkins expects even more growth as the event continues to raise the profile of those charities that cater to health care and the needs of children. “We will continue to support these charities. This year the Sir John Golding Rehab Centre, The Jamaica Society for the Blind and The Jamaica Association for the Deaf will benefit, and nothing pleases us more when you can make a difference in the lives of those who really need help.”

Hugh Lawson, CEO of the National Health Fund, is also pleased with day’s achievements. “This is a wholesome quality product that improves with each staging, the type of support coming out of these events for the health sector is phenomenal and we at the NHF are delighted to continue our partnership with the event as it benefits the nation.”

Race Director Alfred Francis, of Reggae Marathon, another partner of the Sigma Corporate Run, is proud of the remarkable success witnessed on Sunday. He said, “The team worked hard to ensure the success of the event and we are happy to have been a part of this great feat. The introduction of the new “MyLaps” timing this year, improved some efficiencies and I am happy.”

Phillip Edwards(4203) challenges Richard Barrett (4202) on the 5k course to charge to a resounding victory in 18 minutes and 10 seconds at the 12th Annual Sigma Corporate Run held in Kingston Feb. 21. Under the theme “Special Children Need Special Care,” the Run, through subscriptions and donations amassed $11,181,000.00 to be donated to the Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre, the Jamaica Association for the Deaf, the Jamaica Society for the Blind and other entities that provide care for Children with Disabilities.
