OP/ED – Back to School Community Extravaganza

BROWARD COUNTY – More than ever before, public schools are playing a critical role in helping students attain their dreams and realize their full potential. Here in Broward County, we’re proud of a school system that is nationally recognized for high academic performance and school accountability.

Unfortunately, so many of our children and families have been impacted by the economic downturn that our professional school social workers have seen a dramatic increase in the number of families unable to meet basic needs such as food, clothing and school supplies.

These social workers, recognizing that Broward is such a caring community, put out a call to action and I am thrilled that so many have responded. The Children’s Services Council of Broward County (CSC) and Broward County Public Schools are leading Broward’s first-ever Back to School Community Extravaganza. The campaign hopes to provide nearly 3,000 school uniforms and backpacks filled with necessary school supplies so that every child, even those who come from families without means, is able to be successful when the new school year begins.

Corporate partners are also doing their part! As the lead media partner, CBSMiami/TV33 has committed airtime and resources, Gunther Kia and Baptist Health have committed dollars and backpacks, CBS-4’s Neighbors for Neighbors, with support from BankAtlantic, has established a “Back to School Fund.” The legendary Rick Shaw/Majic Children’s Fund, Comcast and Sun-Sentinel are also providing free media support.

We’re asking more of the business community to get involved. If you are an employer, consider holding your own back to school campaign. Encourage your office to raise funds and collect school supplies for children in need. If you’d rather make a cash donation, checks can be made payable to the Broward Educational Foundation, with Back to School Community Extravaganza in the subject line.

How can individuals help? All summer long, school supplies and donations are being collected at various locations throughout Broward County. These and a list of requested items, can be found on the CSC of Broward County’s website, www.cscbroward.org. The campaign will culminate on August 6th, from 9:00am-3:00pm, at the CSC of Broward County, located at 6600 W. Commercial Blvd. in Lauderhill where a “Drive Thru Rally” will give everyone the opportunity to donate supplies and funds to purchase uniforms and shoes. Participants will enjoy raffle prizes and giveaways from Panera Bread, Blue Bell Ice Cream, Frostie Flavors and more!

Make no mistake about it, none of us are unaffected by the economic downturn. But Broward residents are resilient and generous. Together, we will band together and reach into our hearts to help children in need. Their education is their most valuable asset so let’s make sure our children have the tools to succeed.
