OAS and CARICOM Leaders Exchange Views on Hemispheric Issues

WASHINGTON, DC – The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with his counterpart in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, with whom he discussed topics of common interest for both institutions, including the results and debates of the Sixth Summit of the Americas recently held in Cartagena, (Colombia), the Electoral Observation Missions, Haiti, and hemispheric relations.

During the meeting, held at the organization’s headquarters in Washington DC, the two leaders agreed on the importance of the debate that took place at the Summit, and discussed the political climate surrounding the meeting. They also spoke about the electoral observation missions of the OAS in Caribbean countries, their financing and how countries are using the recommendations emerging from them. Finally, they reviewed joint cooperation projects in areas such as energy and climate change.
