North Miami & Miami-Dade Public Schools celebrate Haitian Flag Day
North Miami – The City of North Miami and Miami-Dade Public Schools have join together to celebrate Haitian Flag Day with a student celebration on Friday, May 16, 2008 in front of the North Miami Public Library, 835 NE 132 Street.
Although the holiday is traditionally celebrated on May 18th, the City and the local schools planned the celebration during the weekday to involve the students.
The festivities will begin at 12:30 p.m., with participation by the North Miami Middle School 6th grade students. The entire student body from North Miami Senior High will arrive at 1:30 p.m. This is the fifth year that North Miami is commemorating the historical holiday.
At this year’s event, attendees will sample Kiskeya Kola and typical foods provided by Cayard Bakery and La Patissiere. Entertainment will feature the music of Mecca A.K.A Grimo, a re-enactment of Phases of the Haitian Flag by The Backyard Movement, and student performances from North Miami Middle School and North Miami Senior High School. Special guest announcer, Marcelle Chery, will return for the second year in a row.
The event is open to the public and admission is free.
