North Miami Mayor Challenges Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent In A Census Kick Off Soccer Match
North Miami – It was as a spontaneous remark during the North Miami Census in Schools kick-off on February 2nd at North Miami Senior High School — North Miami Mayor Andre D. Pierre offering up a challenge to Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent, Alberto Carvalho, by way of a soccer match in the name of Census 2010. The game is on! It will take place on Friday, March 12th at North Miami Senior High School (athletic field), 13100 NE 8 Avenue at 4 p.m.
Soccer is wildly popular throughout the world, especially appealing to the diversity of the residents of North Miami, and Miami-Dade County as a whole. Team Captain Pierre, who often plays soccer at North Miami Stadium on the weekends, continues to add to his team, which currently boasts a total of twenty-five members, including a team doctor (Dr. Smith Joseph, practicing physician in North Miami), team spiritual leader (Father Reginald Jean-Mary of Notre Dame D’Haiti Church, team media (many of the familiar voices heard on Haitian-Creole radio), as well as principals and educators from North Miami schools and city employees. He even has pulled in some elected officials – listing U.S. Congressman Kendrick Meek, State Representative Ronald Brisé on his roster. Team Captain Carvalho lists educators and administrators from schools throughout the district on his team roster.
“The bottom line is we are here to bring about awareness of Census 2010,” explains Mayor Pierre, “soccer is a common denominator that we can all relate to, it is just a vehicle to carry the message of the importance of the census.”
