MIAMI GARDENS – School children are benefiting from the Super Bowl coming back to South Florida. Here’s how:
Many of the area’s youth are now taking part in the Super Learning in a Super City (SLSC) program. It all started on December 7th, 2010. South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee Chairman Rodney Barreto kicked off the program by saying,”The NFL always makes sure they give back to the Super Bowl Host Community. This program is living proof of that and ensuring our school children benefit makes me especially proud.”
This school-based initiative allows students regardless of their socio-economic background or geographic location to join in the excitement surrounding Super Bowl XLIV. Participating teachers now have online access to unique lesson plans with a curriculum that used the Super Bowl as a platform to focus on literacy, character education, community service and environmental awareness. Participants in SLSC are also eligible for prizes and access to exclusive South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee and NFL sanctioned events.
For a tenth straight Super Bowl, the Super Learning program will bring the excitement of this global event into the classrooms and create inspired learning environments to help inspire teachers and engage students. Academic lessons will be integrated with many NFL role models including Vince Lombardi, Tony Dungy, Chuck Noll, and the Miami Dolphins own Jason Taylor.
Creators of the Super Learning Program, Daphne Boyd and Dr. Kathy Oropallo, commented that South Florida is rich in community role models, many of which students can learn from. Super Learning culminates on Super Bowl Sunday on February 7, 2010.
