Groups are activating South Floridians to vote for Andrew Gillum
MIAMI – The group behind the Wynwood mural portraying Andrew Gillum as ‘the People’s Candidate’ is planning more unconventional activities to reach out to voters now that early voting has begun.
New Florida Vision PAC is performing daily door-knocking and texting to reach voters on their porches and through their phones. But in addition, they’ll be taking a page from Colombian politics and driving a “Chiva Bus” through Miami neighborhoods such as Hialeah and Doral this Saturday, inviting people at downtown brunch spots to visit the polls early, and barbequing in area parks this weekend.
Andrea Cristina Mercado, director of New Florida Vision, explains, “The people who our electoral system ignores are the people who actually have the power to reshape it this year. We have the numbers. We have the power. And in Andrew Gillum, we have a real people’s candidate who’s prioritizing real people’s issues. We’re going to make sure we get the word out any way we can.”
