New Consul General for the Bahamas to head Atlanta office

NASSAU, Bahamas – The Bahamas Cabinet Office has confirmed that Senator the Hon. Katherine Smith, Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister in Freeport, Grand Bahama, will resign from the Upper Chamber and relinquish her post in the Office of the Prime Minister with effect from May 31, 2009.

Mrs. Smith will take up assignment as Consul General in The Bahamas Consulate General in Atlanta, Georgia, with effect from the 1 June, 2009. The appointment is for a three-year term. Career Foreign Service officer, Ms. Sandra Carey will serve as Consul in the Consulate General in Atlanta. Ms. Carey has previously served in the Consulate General of The Bahamas in New York and in Miami, Florida and at the Bahamas Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.


Senator Kay Smith Appointed Atlanta Consul General

This new consular office is being opened in Atlanta in response to the growing demand for services by Bahamians resident in the greater Atlanta area and by businesses in the southeastern United States with interests in expanding trade and investment in The Bahamas.

The following States will come within the jurisdiction of the Atlanta Consulate General: Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.

Mrs. Smith was born in West End, Grand Bahama, the daughter of Gloria Forbes (nee Martin) and Vincent C. Forbes.

She was educated in Grand Bahama and in the United States where she received a Journalism Degree from Palm Beach Community College. She has undertaken further studies in management at Nova Southeastern University.

Prior to her appointment as Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Mrs. Smith was President of Elshemant Company Limited, owners of a service station complex in Eight Mile Rock, Grand Bahama. She had previously worked in Public Relations, Human Resources Development and Hotel Operations in a number of Grand Bahama-based companies.

An avid sportsperson Mrs. Smith is a Past President and Fast Pitch Chairman of the Grand Bahama Amateur Softball Association, former Secretary General of The Bahamas Softball Federation, and a former member of the Bahamas Ladies National Softball Team.

She is married to Godfrey Smith. The couple has three children Godfrey Jr., Keath and Sydney.
