MIRAMAR – The Broward County Supervisor of Elections has certified over 1,200 signed petitions submitted by Miramar Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis, placing her on the ballot to contest for Broward County Commission seat in District 8 on August 26. That means Davis will not have to pay the election filing fee of over $5,000.00.
“We have worked very hard collecting these petitions over the last 6 months, and this accomplishment is an indication of the support from
the residents and provides encouragement to continue to work towards our goal of victory on Election Day,” commented Davis.
Davis, a registered Democrat, is opposing current Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief for the Commission seat in District 8, and has been working tirelessly in the district and raising funds to mount a strong campaign in an effort to unseat her opponent in the August 26 primary.
As a community leader in 2003, Davis created a non-profit organization, Caribefest Inc. to foster community diversity, tolerance and unity and organized an annual cultural festival called Caribefest. A Miramar Commissioner since November 2010, Alexandra Davis has led a life of public service working 18 years for Miami-Dade County and has successfully transitioned into teaching, obtaining her certification in Biology (grades 6-12). A single parent of a pharmacy student at FAMU, she knows the importance of commitment to our children.
Among her many initiatives, the “League of Clergy” hits close to home being the daughter of a minister. The league meets quarterly with the Commissioner to discuss the concerns of their parishioners and to receive needed resources along with pertinent local, state and federal information.
Commissioner Davis has been appointed to various boards to include the Broward League of Cities and the Energy committee of the National League of Cities. Davis has been recognized for her immense community service by various organizations. She was named by Legacy Magazine as one of the 50 most powerful and influential black business leaders of 2012, ICABA named her as one of South Florida’s 100 most accomplished Caribbean Americans for 2012 and she was one of the Jamaica 50 Diaspora honorees for Florida and the Southern USA.
Her plans for the County include Job Creation and Small Business Development, Economic Development, International Trade, Transportation, Youth Apprenticeships and Redevelopment.
