KINGSTON – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade is saddened at the untimely passing of Ambassador Peter King, O.D., J.P.
A dedicated and distinguished life of public service, spanning the fields of diplomacy, trade negotiations, business and administration, has been snuffed out.
We recall his valued contribution to our foreign service which began in the sixties while working in a variety of posts including that of Deputy High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Guyana; Minister/Counsellor in the Jamaican Embassy, Washington and Jamaica’s Trade Representative to the United States in the late eighties.
He was also a member of various negotiating teams with a strong interest in International Trade Negotiations where his expertise in this area, served the Ministry and the country well. Ambassador King won respect far and wide. He was the recipient of a number of awards for his contributions in advancing Jamaica’s trade.
Among awards received, Mr. King was presented with the Keys to the City of Miami for contribution to the development of Hemispheric Trade; and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the US-Jamaica Chamber of Commerce for stimulating US-Jamaica trade.
Ambassador King has also served as an assistant to the Hon. P .J. Patterson when he was Minister of Tourism and Foreign Trade in the seventies, and also to the Hon. Robert Lightbourne when he was Minister of Trade and Industry, in the late sixties.
