They will be formally recognized at the Sixth Annual Pillars Awards Dinner, scheduled for Friday, September 22, 2006 at the Biscayne Bay-Downtown Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, 1633 North Bayshore Drive.

The affair will begin with a silent auction and reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $45 per person.

• Mrs. Enid Pinkney (Historic Preservation)

In addition to these honorees, the Black Heritage Planning Committee (BHPC) will be presenting a “Young Pillars Scholarship” to a student who has demonstrated leadership potential and a willingness to serve his or her community.

Also this year, the BHPC collaborated with the Visitors and Industry Council to present scholarships to students who will be attending Miami-Dade College, Johnson & Wales University and Florida International University as part of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau’s effort to expand the participation of African Americans in Miami-Dade County’s hospitality industry.

The Black Heritage Planning Committee is a subcommittee of the Black Affairs Advisory Board. It is comprised of volunteer Miami-Dade County employees whose primary purpose is to plan and implement activities that highlight the rich cultural contributions of the African Diaspora.

The annual Pillars Awards recognizes people from the community who often work behind the scenes and are rarely recognized. The committee feels that these people are “Pillars” because without their efforts many programs, peoples and community organizations’ impact would be lessened.
