Miami/Bahamas Goombay Festival Celebrates 30 Years Of Arts, Culture, Heritage & Music
COCONUT GROVE – The Miami/Bahamas Goombay Festival celebration of cultural expression comes to South Florida this weekend, June 3rd and 4th on Grand Avenue (Matilda to Mainhighway/US1) in Coconut Grove, admission is free.
Embracing the legacy of a Bahamian rooted community called “Coconut Grove.” The festival is a two day fun-filled, signature event: A colorful Parade of energetic brightly costumed people gyrating and dancing to the rhythmic accompaniment of cowbells drums and whistles; Along with a display of local and national vendors prepared to share their authentic Bahamian and American cuisine with you.
The street festival will transform Grand Avenue into a journey across the ocean creating a perfect harmony between the rich Caribbean culture of the Bahamas and the strong African-American vibes of Miami.
This years Festival honors the 30th Anniversary Celebrating Arts, Culture, Music, and Heritage. Always the “star” of the festival is the Royal Bahamas Police Band, a 55-member internationally acclaimed musical group comprised of the islands police force, plays in both march and concert style.
The native junkannoos, stilt walkers, fire and limbo dancers strut their stuff as they rush through the streets further creating the festive Bahamian atmosphere. The entertainment line-up features a diverse flavor of artists that range from Calypso all the way to Gospel (Black Violin, Dre Marshall, Canton Jones, Maryell Epps, Sage, and many more).
The festival also creates a “HEAT” atmosphere which highlights the NBA Rhythm ‘n Rims Showcase; an interactive 18-wheeler that transforms into two levels of basketball courts, fans can shoot 3 pointers and free throws against their friends for the chance to win authentic NBA merchandise. NBA Rhythm ‘n Rims also features appearances by NBA players, legends , mascots and dance teams, all set against the sounds of DJ Dallas Green. The Miami/Bahamas Goombay Festival in Coconut Grove, Inc is dedicated to preserving the authenticity of the Goombay legacy.
