Miami-Dade’s Commissioner Jean Monestime hosts Haitian History Bee

MIAMI – Haitian history will take center stage on Saturday as Miami-Dade County Public School students showcase their knowledge about the rich cultural legacy of Haiti during the first-ever Haitian Heritage Cultural Month History Bee, sponsored by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jean Monestime, District 2.

The History Bee takes place on Saturday, May 19, 2012, from 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., at North Miami Senior High School, 13110 NE 8th Avenue, in the City of North Miami. Other sponsors of the event include FANM Ayisien Nan Myiami, Inc. and the Miami Marlins.

“The history of the Haitian people is rich and should be shared and cherished by everyone. The History Bee is an excellent opportunity to share the story of the Haitian people with the residents of Miami-Dade County. This is also a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the contributions that Haitians have made to our country and our world,” Commissioner Monestime said.

The program will include a musical performance by The Little Saints, a local family band comprised of Haitian-American youth. Judges for the contest are Jean Claude Exulien and Claude Charles from the Haitian American Historical Society.

Youth will compete for prizes.
