Miami Carnival Black Business Month Spotlight: Randy Ellis, Founder Caribbean Affairs Photographer

SOUTH FLORIDA – As we celebrate Black Business Month, South Florida Caribbean News is “Capturing a Moment in Time” with Randy Ellis, Founder Caribbean Affairs Photographer.

Q: How did you get into photography and can you describe the evolution of your career?

A: Everything begins with a starting point, photography is no exception. After taking an early retirement, I was faced with the challenge of keeping myself busy and at the same time controlling my time, space and destiny. I did not want to be caught up in the maddening crowd again to duplicate the hustle and bustle that exists in the job market.

As a result, I decided to pick an after retirement career that will allow me to stay at home without having to clock in. There were all possibilities on the internet, and since I had the time, I decided to build my own Website. I started from scratch using my programming skills and background that I acquire while I worked at Chase bank. Without a tutor, it was a struggle, so I had to depend on reading and understanding what it took to build a Website on my own. I downloaded the Website software, read the instructions and hired myself without pay.

After making my first Website, I realized that images and videos were very essential in creating a Website and that in fact was the beginning and birth of my career as a photographer.

My career then evolved from struggling on a bumpy road like a roller coaster but landed on a smooth and comfortable highway to success.

A: My most rewarding experience came when I videotaped and took pictures of Barbados carnival. I posted them on YouTube and was pleasantly surprised when I saw the thousands of views I got in a very short period of time.

A: I usually travel with all my equipment in case I am called upon. My 5300 Nikon, Tripods, external flash lens, external microphones and my camera bag which is always packed and strung over my shoulder with all the necessary accessories.

Q: What’s one dream photography destination?

A: There is always something new to learn in photography, and my dream is to master the art. Hopefully, one day I would be able to close my eyes and shoot a perfect picture.
