Local Government Elections in T&T will be held on October 21st
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Prime Minister Hon. Kamla Persad Bissessar has announced that Local Government Elections will be held on October 21st.
The Prime Minister says she is on record about calling on the then PNM Government to hold Local Government elections.
She stated that holding the election on time was more important than the result. “Win, lose or draw, we must keep the promises we made to the people and the rest will fall into place,” she declared.
She says that the Government proposes proportional representation system for local gov’t and the new system will make citizens aware of who their prospective alderman will be before election.
“The time has come for Aldermen to be selected by the population and not selected few. Every vote will count under the proportional representative system and no vote will go to waste. Proposed changes in the law include Local Gov’t will be held when they are due, my Gov’t will propose new rules for election of Aldermen. I look forward to the support of all parties in the Lower House. We intend to table this Bill on Local Gov’t Reform tomorrow. We intend to return to the House on September 6th, thereafter to the Senate on September 10th”
