Miami-Dade County organizes relief efforts for Tropical Storm Noel victims

MIAMI – As a measure of solidarity with the victims of the recent Tropical Storm Noel in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez and Commissioner Rebeca Sosa, Chairwoman, Santo Domingo Sister Cities Program along with Chairman Bruno A. Barreiro and the Board of County Commissioners, have asked all Team Metro regional offices, Miami-Dade County Fire Stations and Miami-Dade County Police Stations to open their doors for donations.

The offices and stations will be available to receive donations beginning Tuesday, November 6, 2007, at 8 a.m. They will continue receiving donations until Tuesday, November 13, 2007.

Only the following items are needed: blankets, bottled water, first-aid kits, diapers, baby food, generators and canned or dry food. Due to the total devastation of the area, families are in urgent need of essential items in good condition.

“We know all too well how natural disasters can disrupt our lives. Miami-Dade County appreciates the positive contributions the Caribbean community has made to us and is offering a helping hand at this time of need,” Mayor Alvarez said.

“The residents of Miami-Dade County have always demonstrated their willingness to assist those who have suffered from natural disasters. Once again, I ask our residents to open up their hearts to help our friends in the Dominican and Haitian community who are suffering as a result of Tropical Storm Noel,” Commissioner Sosa said.

To date, more than 100 people have died, 16,712 houses have been affected in the Dominican Republic alone, and more than 100 communities have been cut off due to flooding and damaging of roads.

Anyone wanting to donate to this relief effort can call the Miami-Dade County 3-1-1 Answer Center for their nearest Team Metro, Fire Department or Police Department location.
