Lauderdale Lakes Commissioner, Hazelle Rogers to receive “Outstanding Achievers Awards”

LAUDERDALE LAKES – The Honorable Hazelle Rogers who was elected to office in the City of Lauderdale Lakes in 1996, and is credited as the first Caribbean American female to be elected to office in the South Eastern United States is slated to receive ‘The Outstanding Achievers Award’ from the Orange Bowl Foundation.

Rogers who was reelected unopposed for another 4 year term which begins on March 14th, will be among the 6 honorees at the Blue Cross Blue Shields of Florida Orange Bowl Foundation, Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Benefit on Friday March 3rd, at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale. The Orange Bowl Foundation has been around for nearly three quarters of a century and has been an integral part of Miami and South Florida. It was created to promote positive social and economic activity within the community. Its purpose is to strengthen the organization’s ties to the community, especially its young people.

The Foundation’s ‘Outstanding Achiever Award’ is a prestigious award given only to the community’s best and brightest. Among this year’s honorees are Congressman Alcee Hastings and Mrs. M. Athalie Range. The event which starts at 7:00pm will feature entertainment by popular comedian J. Anthony Brown and former American Idol winner Ruben Studdard.

Rogers, the immediate past President of the Broward League of Cities is the recipient of numerous service awards. She was inducted in the Broward County’s Women Hall of Fame in March 2001 and was nominated for the National League of Cities, Women in Municipal Government 2005 Awards. She is very involved in numerous community activities, and is the founder of the Caribbean American Democratic Club, a member of the Lauderdale Lakes Democratic Club and the Greater Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and serves on many boards. In 2005 she played the key leadership role in the hosting of the First World Youth Netball Championship Games here in the United States. The Games which was held in Fort Lauderdale at the Broward County Convention Center, had 20 countries participating from as far away as Australia, Africa and the Caribbean region, just to name a few.

Commissioner Hazelle Rogers definitely exemplifies ‘an Outstanding Achiever’.
