Kids In Science (K.I.S.) Club, founded by Caribbean-American, celebrates 2nd Annual Community Fair

PLANTATION – The Kids In Science (K.I.S.) Club, founded by Caribbean-American, Eric J. Hammond, P.E. celebrates its 2nd Annual Community Science and Technology Fair on Saturday, November 3, 2007 At The Jim Ward Community Center, 301 N.W. 46 Avenue In Plantation.

There theme this year is “An Odyssey In Science”.

At the science fair the kids will display numerous science related projects. “This is a great opportunity for the kids to share the excitement of the scientific process and share what they have learned”, says Hammond.

On November 17th, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Inverrary Resort Hotel in Lauderhill, the Kids In Science Club will celebrate its Inaugural Scholarship Awards Banquet. The keynote speaker will be Aviator Captain Barrington Irving, the pilot who flew around the world in 97 days.

In addition to Captain Irving, there will be an appearance by the Inventor of the first Robotic Prosthetic Arm, Engineer, Ivan Yaeger, along with other exciting performances.

The Kids In Science Club was started in February 2005. It was the vision of Eric Hammond, P.E. a professional engineer. Eric saw a need for more local engineers in the industry and had the vision to pursue that need, resulting in the formation of the Kids In Science Club.

The goal of the K.I.S. Club is to encourage more young men and women to get involved in science and also to de-mystify it at an early age and remove the fear of science and stimulate young people’s interest in the discipline.

This community effort is totally funded through The Support & Entrepreneurial Center, a non-profit organization founded and funded by Eric Hammond.

Last year, over $3,000 dollars in scholarships and cash prizes were awarded to the kids and every child was a winner. All science projects, materials, personalized T-shirts, tote bags and other related items are free to the kids.

As a prominent leader said, “Science and Math are absolutely at the center of our national survival. If we do not step up to the plate right now and face foreign competition head on, in science and math, then we are in desperate trouble”.

Since Science is now a measurable module of FCAT and the K.I.S. Club helps to prepare the kids for this new challenge. Most of the work of The KIS Club is practical experiments, videos, visitation of speakers such as chiropractors, dentists, engineers, science teachers, science clown and even motivational speakers, one of which spoke on “Science of the Mind”.

“We are very proud of the accomplishments of this program and the fact that we now have 75 kids registered in the program”, says Hammond.

On November 14th, 2006 The School Board of Broward County presented Eric Hammond with a Proclamation to the Kids In Science Club recognizing him for the work they are doing and plans to continue to do.
