Jamaica’s Prime Minister hosts luncheon in honor of Cuba’s Ambassador
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Prime Minister, Bruce Golding, of Jamaica has expressed his Government’s gratitude to Cuba’s Ambassador, Gisela Garcia Rivera, for the significant role she has played in strengthening the friendship between Jamaica and Cuba.
Mr. Golding, on Tuesday (Oct 28), hosted a luncheon at Jamaica House, which was attended by Government Ministers and members of the Cabinet, in honour of Ambassador Garcia, who recently returned to her post, having recovered from injuries she sustained in a motor vehicle accident earlier this year.
He noted that through Ambassador Rivera’s efforts, Cuba has expanded its programme to establish a new ophthalmology centre and that equipment is waiting to be shipped off to Jamaica for the centre.
“Within the next week, the Ministry of Health will provide details of the steps to be taken to complete the preparatory work for the centre”, PM Golding said. In raising a toast to Ambassador Rivera’s recovery, health and strength and the growing friendship between both countries , Mr. Golding said she should always consider Jamaica her second home.
In her response, the Cuban Ambassador said she was moved and strengthened by the outpouring of love and support she received from Jamaicans during her recovery. She noted that the relationship between Jamaica and Cuba continues to grow from strength to strength as was evidenced during the recent Tropical Storm, Gustav.
Ambassador Rivera expressed Cuba’s appreciation for the donations and assistance which Cuba received from Jamaica in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Gustav. “You had your own problems and still you were able to send assistance to Cuba. Our Government is very grateful”, Ambassador Garcia said.
