Jamaican High School Alumni Spring Ball In Full Swing
SUNRISE – The Dinthill Technical High School Alumni Association, Florida chapter will hold its eighth annual Spring Ball this Saturday, March 6, at the Sunrise Grand Ballroom.
Highlight of the evening’s proceedings will be the recognition of past students of the alma mater which is located in Linstead, Clarendon. The honorees will include Mr. Winston Cole, of the Class of 1968, now a businessman and resident of Kansas and Mr. Zaccheus McKnight, of the Class of 1955, now retired and residing in Jamaica.
Some 40 students of the Class of 1970 residing in cities across the Jamaican Diaspora also be honored at the event.
President of the Florida chapter, Mr. Barry Nugent, said that past students living in cities across the Diaspora were invited to unite and fellowship during the annual weekend of activities, as well as raise funds for the School’s development program. Some of these students will come from as far as Europe, he added.
Proceeds from this year’s event will go towards replacing a bio-digester at the school. According to Mr. Nugent, the bio-digester, used to supply cooking gas on the campus, was installed by the Scientific Research Council sometime ago. The equipment is now in need of repairs and members of this chapter has responded to the call.
Additionally, proceeds will also provide scholarships for students in the rural communities who will now have an opportunity for easier application process to tertiary institutions in the United States as Dinthill Technical has now been certified as one of the SAT Testing Centers in Jamaica. The SAT test is part of the entry requirement for application submission for universities in the USA.
Dinthill Technical School was started in 1938 and has an enrolment of more than 2,000 students at the co-educational institution.
Principal of the school, Mr. Dennis Clarke, will be among the special guests at the annual event.
Other alumni chapters have been formed in Toronto, New York and Jamaica.
