KINGSTON, Jamaica – A group of high-ranking Jamaican government officials are slated to address the Jamaican community in Manhattan and its environs on matters related to conducting business transactions in Jamaica later this month.
The forum, “Outlook for the Future: Doing Business in Jamaica,” organized by the Jamaica National Building Society and the Gleaner Company Limited, is set for the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan on Friday October 20, 2006.
Led by Dr Carlton Davis, Cabinet Secretary and head of the Jamaican Civil Service, the group will include representatives from the Registrar General’s Department, the National Land Agency, the Customs and Excise Department, the Passport and Immigration Office and organizers of World Cup Cricket 2007.
Earl Jarrett, general manager, Jamaica National Building Society, noted that the forum was part of his organization’s thrust to facilitate dialogue between key decision-makers in Jamaica with Jamaicans overseas.
“We know there are Jamaicans in the Diaspora with a keen interest in their homeland, and with information from the right sources they can make informed decisions about doing business here,” he said, speaking from his Kingston offices. “We have chosen some of the key government agencies which facilitate business transactions, and we expect our audience to leave our forum with practical suggestions about issues such as regularizing their land titles, birth and death registration procedures, and bringing goods into Jamaica.”
The forum is the second such being hosted this year and is part of a series held in Canada and in several locations in the United States and the United Kingdom each year. Presenters to date have included the Dr. Omar Davies, Minister of Finance; Dr. Peter Philips, Minister of National Security; Bruce Golding, Opposition Leader, and Francis Forbes, former Police Commissioner.
