Hospital ship USNS Comfort to visit Trinidad

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – The hospital ship, USNS Comfort, will be in Trinidad and Tobago from Sunday, September 16 through Friday, September 22, 2007. The Ministry of Health of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago is coordinating this mission with the Embassy.

This visit is part of the Partnership for the Americas mission that the U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) conducts in Latin American and Caribbean nations. The medical crew of more than 500 military and civilian doctors, nurses and health care professionals will provide medical care and training in the specialties of general and eye surgery, pediatric orthopedics, plastics, pediatric surgery, oral surgery, ENT, OBGYN, dermatology and veterinary care.


USNS Comfort

Medical staff from the ship will travel to shore each day to provide medical care free of charge to the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex and the Arima hospital.

The ship also has a construction battalion, or Seabee, unit aboard that is scheduled to perform maintenance work at the Perseverance Cove Community Center, including re-roofing the facility, electrical and plumbing repairs, as well as painting the facility.
