Honoring the Pioneers and Leaders of Miami’s Little Haiti

NORTH MIAMI – In honor of author David C. Brown, M.A.’s book, entitled The Story of Little Haiti: Featuring Its Pioneers, those individuals featured in the book will be honored by the Mayor Kevin A. Burns and the North Miami City Council on Thursday, February 1, 2007 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 770 NE 125 ST, in North Miami.

Mr. Brown’s book highlights various individuals as pioneers and leaders in the development of Miami-Dade County’s Haitian community, of which the epicenter is Little Haiti.

North Miami’s own councilman, Mr. Jacques Despinosse, is one of those featured. The honorees will receive special recognition at the invitation-only reception where typical Haitian food will be served.

The celebration will continue that evening at the North Miami Public Library, 835 NE 132 Street, at 7:30 p.m. where Mr. Brown will read excerpts from his book at a special guest author program that is open to the public.

The book’s cover, entitled “Caribbean Marketplace”, features historical and folkloric scenes in Little Haiti by artist Alexandra Barbot, from her series “Celebrations in Little Haiti.” The book is also illustrated by artist Willer Fils-Aime.

After the reading, Mr. Brown will be available to sign copies of his book. This presentation is free and open to the public, with copies of the books available for purchase at the event.
