Haiti’s Presidential Election Postponed

Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson Responds to Postponement of Haiti’s Presidential Election

SOUTH FLORIDA – Haiti’s presidential election scheduled to take place on Sunday, December 27th has been postponed.

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson has issued the following statement:

I am happy to announce that the presidential run-off election that was scheduled to take place in Haiti on Sunday, December 27, has been postponed.

This was the number one recommendation I made in a letter sent last week to Secretary of State John Kerry, based on input I received from South Florida’s large Haitian constituency, which had expressed concerns about the credibility of the first round held in October.

I am very pleased that, in part as a result of my request, the run-off has been indefinitely postponed so that a special commission can investigate the credibility of the electoral process. I traveled to Haiti as part of a bipartisan congressional delegation to observe the presidential election’s first round and will continue to monitor the process. Without fair and credible elections, the nation will not be able to advance economically or build ladders of opportunity for its vulnerable population.
