Washington, D.C – Key Haitian American elected officials from across the United States are convening on Capitol Hill for the inaugural meeting of the National Haitian American Elected Officials Network (NHAEON). The meetings, on October 29th and 30th are convened by Marie St. Fleur, State Representative, Massachusetts (D-5th Suffolk) and facilitated by the William Monroe Trotter Institute of the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Haitian-American elected officials from Massachusetts, Florida, Illinois, New York, New Jersey and New Hampshire along with Raymond Joseph, Ambassador of Haiti to the United States will be present at a press conference on Friday, October 30, 2009 at 5:30 PM at the US Capitol Building, Room H 137.
NHAEON’s mission is to positively influence the development and implementation of United States’ policies which have a direct impact on Haiti by becoming an organized and collective voice.
The collective legislators will release a position paper at the press conference based on NHAEON identified priorities for the United States policy towards Haiti which include:
• Immigration reform,
• United States aid to Haiti,
• United States, State Department designation of Haiti,
• Promote structural, economic, and humanitarian investment in Haiti.
