Haitian-American Author Danticat to be Honored in North Miami

NORTH MIAMI – Miami writer, Edwidge Danticat, will be honored by the city of North Miami at a lunch reception hosted by Mayor Andre D. Pierre on Thursday, October 8th from 12 – 2 p.m. at North Miami City Hall, 776 NE 125 Street – 2nd floor. The lunch will be catered by two North Miami businesses, El Kiosko and MOCA Café.

Haitian-born Danticat recently won the prestigious John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation ‘Genius Award,’ (an award which includes a $500,000 endowment), for her work as a novelist since her debut novel “Breath, Eyes, Memory” was released in 1994. Her writing addresses human endurance and perseverance. Her most recent novel, “Brother, I’m Dying,” is a tribute to her 81 year-old uncle, who fled from the turmoil in Haiti, only to die in the custody of U.S. immigration officials in Miami.

As part of the reception, Ms. Danticat will be presented a key to the city of North Miami. Also invited to the luncheon are the top reading students from North Miami schools. The students will have the rare opportunity to meet the author and read excerpts from her work, which is a powerful source of inspiration for young writers.
