Guyanese in South Florida to celebrate Republic Anniversary

Miami – The Guyanese American community in South Florida will celebrate Guyana’s 43rd Republic anniversary with a ‘Guyana Nite’ of cultural performances, dinner and dancing to be held on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the Guyanese owned Hibiscus Lounge, 6289 West Sunrise Blvd., Sunrise, Florida.

This event, hosted by the Guyanese Community of Florida, in conjunction with the Guyana Honorary Consulate in Miami is the first of its kind to be held in South Florida to celebrate the anniversary of Guyana’s becoming a Republic. Proceeds from the event will go towards assisting deserving charities in Guyana.

Among those performing at the event will be comedian Ken Corsbie, entertainer/musician Harold Caribbean, folklorist Qyneares, Indian cultural dancers and singers from the Krishna Mandir of Hollywood, Florida Hindu Parishad/Shree Saraswattie Davie Mandir, Romeo & The Tassa Boyz drummers and Champa Chameli Dance Group.

Guyana’s Honorary Consul Ramzan Roshanali says the event has been made possible through sponsorship by a number of companies including Machinery Corporation of America, Inc., Laparkan Group of Companies, Dipcon, Banks DIH, Hibiscus Restaurant & Lounge, Demerara Distillers Limited, Surinam Airways, Caribbean Airlines, Sea Freight Agencies, HAB International Inc.,Digicel and Western Union.

The Government of Guyana will be represented at the event by Public Service Minister Dr. Jennifer Westford while Opposition Leader Brig.(ret) David Granger has indicated that he will send a representative. A number of local elected officials including Florida’s Lieutenant Governor Jennifer Carroll and members of the Caribbean Consular Corps have also been invited as special guests.

Members of the Planning Committee for the event are Wesley Kirton, Larry London, Dr. Shivnarie Dookhie, Mr. Leslie Lachmansingh, and Mr. Parmy Bhagwandin.

Tickets for the event are $20.00 each and patrons will have the opportunity to partake of some of Guyana’s finest beverages and diverse cuisine. They will also have an opportunity to win roundtrip tickets to Guyana on Surinam Airways and Caribbean Airlines.
