ST.GEORGE’S, Grenada – Grenada’s Prime Minister says Cuba has contributed to the most important economic project in Grenada’s history, the Maurice Bishop International Airport.
The Prime Minister was speaking to a special ceremony on Wednesday evening, marking the restoration of diplomatic relations between Havana and St. George’s following the United States led Intervention in Grenada in 1983.
The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation to the Cuban government for its continued assistance to Grenada, even in the face of the US embargo and crippling global financial, food and fuel crises, which have significantly reduced employment levels.
“The assistance we received from Cuba over the years in Health, Education, Sports and other areas, is testimony to the unique relationship that exists between our two countries,” the Prime Minister said, while pointing to the inclusion of Agriculture in the 2010 Joint Commission, agreed in Havana last month.
The Grenadian leader repeated a call for the removal of the US Embargo, which he said will mark the start of a new relationship between Cuba and the United States.
He thanked the Cuban government for scholarships granted to young Grenadians and said that his government is committed to strengthening and deepening the relationship between “our two countries.”
Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas, who was then Tourism Minister, became the first government minister to visit Cuba, when the two countries resumed diplomatic relations in 1994, after a 10 year break, preceded by the collapse of the 1979-1983 Grenada revolution.
