Greater Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce’s 2010 ‘Small Business Of The Year’ Awards Winners

Fort Lauderdale – The Greater Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce honored two outstanding small businesses during its Small Business of the Year Awards Dinner and Dance. The Chamber’s Small Business of the Year Awards program recognize the dedication, entrepreneurial achievements and community and social responsibility displayed by small businesses.

This year’s Small Business of the Year Awards Dinner was held on Friday, November 12th at the Hollywood Rotary Club in Hollywood, Florida. The featured speaker for the event was, Congressman, the Honorable Alcee L. Hastings. In his message to the attendees Congressman Hastings spoke of the Small Business Jobs and Credit Act of 2010. This he said includes a number of provisions to help small businesses, especially women, low-income, veteran and minority entrepreneurs, access the capital they need, promotes state trade and rural exports, and includes other tax and credit initiatives which is aimed at growing jobs and economic activity.

The 2010 Nominees included Douglas Chiropractic Centers, Jerk Machine Restaurant, Memory Lane Café’, Phyl’s Academy Preparatory School and Super Duper Liquor.

This year’s Small Business of the Year winners are:

Memory Lane Café’, a family owned and operated business which opened its doors in 1994 and has since been dedicated to providing friendly service, enhancing the lives of both customers and staff, and giving back to the community. Memory Lane Café’ and its owners was the founding member of the South Florida Business group which evolved into the Greater Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce. It is also the oldest Caribbean American Restaurant and Lounge in Broward County. Orel Powell, owner was very instrumental in having the city of Lauderdale Lakes change the hours of operations for Restaurant and Lounge from 2am to 4am, providing the businesses a chance to meet the need of a growing Caribbean American population and their spending and recreational habits.

Douglas Chiropractic Centers, established in 1985 by Doctor Michael Douglas, a Chiropractic Physician and Certified Chiropractic Neurologist. Douglas Chiropractic provides World Class Diagnostic and Treatment to a very broad group of people. Its patients include many Olympics and Professional Athletes for sport related injuries and injury prevention. The practice also handles large volume of Automobile, fall, and work injuries. Douglas Chiropractic has since expanded and now has locations in Lauderhill, Miramar and Coral Springs, Florida. Douglas Chiropractic Centers is also committed to giving back to the community, and has been actively involved and supported numerous community events and organization fundraisers, including services to the World Youth Netball Competition, which was held in Broward County Florida and the Jamaican Olympic Team.

Albert Lettman, President of the Greater Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce congratulated the 2010 Small Business of the Year Award winners and applauded them for their vision and hard work in the community. “Today we honor their financial success, as well as their commitment to their employees, customers and communities,” said Albert Lettman.
