Former Grenadian Prime Minister was guest at the first ever Trinidad & Tobago Emancipation Day Celebration in Miami
MIAMI – Former Grenadian Prime Minister and Leader of her Majesty’s Opposition Dr. The Honorable Keith Mitchell, while visiting Florida as part of his overseas tour to major cities in London and North America, was a guest at the first ever Trinidad & Tobago Emancipation Day Celebration, held in Miami on Sunday August 14th.
The Guest of honor at the Emancipation Celebration, usually celebrated in Trinidad & Tobago on August 1st, was Lieutenant Governor of Florida, Jennifer Carroll, the second highest ranking official in the state of Florida.

She was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, West Indies, immigrated to the United States as a young child and served her adopted nation with honor and distinction. Carroll enlisted in the United States Navy in 1979, rising from the ranks of an enlisted jet mechanic to retire as a Lieutenant Commander Aviation Maintenance Officer after 20 years. During her time in the Navy she was awarded numerous awards that include: Navy “E” Good Conduct Ribbon, Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy Commendation Medals, two Navy Governor Achievement Medals, two Sea Service Ribbons, National Defense Service Medal, two Coast Guard Special Operation Ribbons, and an Expert Pistol Medal.
Dr. Mitchell, who was a guest at the head table, addressed the audience and highlighted the close relationship between the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago and Grenada and congratulated the Lieutenant General on her accomplishments.

Among the persons at the head table were County Commissioner of Broward, Dale Holeness, Counsel General of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago in Miami, Dr. Anil Ramnanan, and other dignitaries.
The most gratifying moment for Dr. Mitchell was perhaps meeting a former colleague from his days as a professor at Howard University, whom he had not seen for over 20 yrs. Dr. Lashley, in his speech, not only recognized Dr. Mitchell but humorously commented that “he had gone on to become an expert in communication, while Dr. Keith went on to become a Prime Minister”.
