COCONUT CREEK – Proceeds from Food For The Poor’s New Hope, New Beginnings gala at the Boca West Country Club on Saturday, Feb. 6, will go directly to meet the dire housing needs of Haiti’s earthquake victims.
Angel Aloma, Food For The Poor’s Executive Director, and Calvin Hughes, master of ceremonies for New Hope, New Beginnings, will share stories from their personal journeys to Haiti immediately following the devastating earthquake. Hughes, an Emmy Award-winning newscaster, has traveled to Haiti with Food For The Poor to witness the plight of the destitute, and has just returned from reporting on the earthquake’s aftermath.
“Food For The Poor has worked in Haiti for more than 24 years, and we are dedicated to the rebuilding effort,” said Robin Mahfood, Food For The Poor’s CEO/President. “The people of Haiti desperately need our help to recover from this catastrophic natural disaster.”
The Food For The Poor/ Haiti office in Port-au-Prince is comprised of a warehouse, a kitchen and food distribution program, a medical clinic and an office. Food For The Poor builds houses for the destitute; distributes aid; provides support for orphans and the aged; and implements life-changing projects that include self-sustainable programs in the agricultural and fishing sectors.
The charity’s 15th-annual Boca Raton gala will feature an elegant cocktail reception, an exclusive silent auction, gourmet dinner and dancing. The live house rally will help provide funding to build much-needed housing for Haiti’s destitute. By providing simple, sturdy homes, the nonprofit can change the lives of entire families by giving them the security of a safe place to live.
Food For The Poor will honor South Florida residents whose generosity and dedication to the organization have been inspirational. Food For The Poor’s 2009 Ambassadors for the Poor honorees include Louis C. Bachrodt III, Coleman and Anna Gorham, Ron and Mary Jasco, David and Eileen Price, and Lynn University’s President, Dr. Kevin Ross.
