Florida Alpha Alumni Association continues health mission to alma mater in Jamaica

MIAMI – The Florida Chapter of Alpha Alumnae, Convent of Mercy Academy Alpha High School Association will host its second health initiative “Mission Healthy Alpha –2011” at the school’s campus, South Camp Road in Kingston on April 7 and 8.

The two-day mission is open to the 1,400 students as well as staff of Alpha Academy and will cover areas of primary health care along with mentoring to the students.

Students will receive basic health screenings, lectures and educational material on primary care and personal development to be provided by the team of volunteers from the Florida chapter joined by the sister chapter in Kingston and assisted by additional volunteers of medical professionals in Jamaica, the Jamaica Defence Force and the Jamaica Red Cross.

Support for the health mission have been provided by proceeds from the annual fund raising events hosted by the Chapter in South Florida along with contributions from several corporate and individual sponsors in Jamaica, the Ministries of Health and Education.

“Mission Healthy Alpha” began in November 2009 when members of the Florida chapter embarked on their mission to expand assistance to their alma mater. The intent was to share with the students the knowledge and tools to be empowered and proactive regarding their own health and well-being. This support was even extended to students attending other schools in the surrounding communities.

The first mission to the Alpha campus was described as “a resounding success by President of the Florida chapter, Mrs. Pat Lee who indicated that “it is our intention as true daughters of Alpha to keep alive the Mercy charism of compassion and care through this service project”.
