KINGSTON, Jamaica – With the expected increase in the number of visitors to the Jamaica during the summer period, including students returning to Jamaica from locations that may be affected by the Influenza A (H1N1) Virus (formerly called Swine Flu), Jamaica’s Ministry of Health is urging members of the public to exercise increased vigilance in protecting themselves from any possible Influenza infection.
The Ministry’s warning comes in light of the rapid increase in the number of cases being reported to the World Health Organisation on a daily basis. There are still no confirmed cases of the Influenza A (H1N1) virus in Jamaica. However, the MOH’s resources and facilities remain on high alert.
As of May 26, 46 countries have officially reported 12,954 cases of influenza A (H1N1) infection, including 92 deaths.
Persons are being reminded to observe good hygiene practices to ensure that they are not infected with any form of the influenza virus. These include frequent hand washing with soap and water, covering mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, avoiding contact with persons with flu-like symptoms and avoiding intimate contact, including hand shaking and kissing.
