Doodu Boy Comes To South Florida’s Empire Stage
Jamaican play Doodu Boy is ready to thrill audiences in South Florida
FT. LAUDERDALE – Doodu Boy, the hit Jamaican play runs in South Florida from December 3rd to December 20th, at Empire Stage 1140 North Flagler Drive in Ft. Lauderdale.
After a successful opening in Los Angeles, followed by two stellar off Broadway runs, standing ovations in San Francisco, on Broadway New York, and Kingston Jamaica, the 2014 Audelco award nominee is ready to thrill audiences in Ft. Lauderdale.
Doodu Boy is the harrowing, but hilarious autobiographical story of Stefhen Bryan’s struggle across three continents to find unconditional love in the face of an absent father and overzealous mother.
The story begins with his frightening childhood in a Jamaican ghetto on a church commune, where he falls into the neighborhood cesspool and earns his nickname: Doodu Boy. He soon escapes to America where he’s long dreamt of road trips with his father, but life never seems to fulfill those hopes.
After multiple attempts on his own life, learning the shocking truth of his origins, and a showdown with an NYPD armada as he attempts to connect with his father, he ultimately leaves the West to begin a rebirth in Japan. There, in the midst of a sexual rampage, he meets a girl who promises the beginning of the deep connection that he’s always wanted.
Doodu Boy is a story that will resonate with many: A love story that begins in a place of horrific trauma, and a protagonist who must surmount daunting obstacles to emerge triumphant, played out against an international canvas stretching from Jamaica to the U.S.A. to Japan.
Bryan is also author of the critically acclaimed Black Passenger Yellow Cabs: A Memoir of Exile and Excess in Japan and the recently published novel Only Begotten, which is being adapted to film.
He currently lives in Tokyo and California with his wife, who is translating Doodu Boy to Japanese, for performances in Japan.
Doodu Boy will run at Empire Stage on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 PM, and Sundays at 5 PM (Thursday Dec 3rd is a preview performance).
