Deadline extended for nominations for South Florida Minority Woman Business Owner of the Year Award

FORT LAUDERDALE – The Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) announced today that the nomination deadline for the South Florida Minority Woman Business Owner of the Year award has been extended until October 9, 2006.

“Our goal is to recognize the accomplishments of minority women business owners in South Florida. We want to ensure that we create awareness of the award and reach the widest number of nominees,” said Julia Suppe, event chair and president-elect of NAWBO’s Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Chapter. “We welcome self-nominations as well as nominations of others for this award.”

The South Florida Minority Woman Business Owner of the Year is an award program that continues the mission of NAWBO – to foster and develop women entrepreneurs in economic, social and political spheres of power worldwide. The role of minority women business owners in NAWBO’s mission is critical. Research by the Center for Women’s Business Research and the National Women’s Business Council shows dramatic increases in the number of woman-owned businesses and businesses owned by women of color. The rate of growth of business ownership for both groups has outpaced the rate of growth for all firms.

“Shining a spotlight on minority women-owned businesses will acknowledge how important these women are to our economy,” stated Suppe. “NAWBO’s strength is in the diversity of its members, and its benefits include opportunities for growth and professional development.”

The South Florida Minority Woman Business Owner of the Year award will be held on November 6, 2006 at 6:00 p.m. at the Westin Hotel/Cypress Creek, 400 Corporate Drive, Fort Lauderdale, FL.

The keynote speaker for the event is Phyllis Hill Slater, President of Hill Slater, Inc., an engineering and architectural consulting firm. Ms. Slater has been recognized by presidents, state and local governments, professional and civic groups and organizations. A former National President of NAWBO and chair and co-founder of Black Women Entrepreneurs, Ms. Slater works tirelessly to promote the economic health of all women in business.

Sponsors for the award program include Matrix Employee Leasing and Marble of the World. These fine companies are demonstrating their commitment to women entrepreneurs.
