Culturama 2011 Celebrates Jamaica’s Independence In South Florida

CORAL SPRINGS – Jamaica Awareness Inc. will present Culturama 2011 on Sunday July 31st at 7:00 p.m. at Coral Springs Center for the Arts, celebrating Emancipation Day on August 1st and Jamaica’s 49th year of Independence, under the distinguished patronage of the Consul General of Jamaica the Honorable Sandra Grant – Griffiths, as part of the official Independence Celebration in South Florida.

Culturama or Mello-Go- Round is a premier family show that captures the true meaning of Festival. It covers every aspect of the Jamaican culture; music, dance, spoken word and drama. This year we feature Wolmer’s Prep. School dancers, out of Kingston, Oberlin High School Choir and Clonmel Cultural Club out of St. Mary.

The groups coming directly out of Jamaica have won numerous awards, in Music, Modern Dance and Traditional Dance and will give performances of a lifetime, in dances to include Maypole, Dinki Mini, Quadrill, Kumina as well as ring games.

There will be various forms of modern Dance to include Jazz, Hip Hop, Reggae and Dance Hall. Oberlin will thrill the crowd with folk, gospel as well as classical music.

All of this will be complimented by local performers who will complete the mix of our ethnicity to include Chinese Lion dance, Belly Dancing and Indian Dance and Music.

“This event is a must see for those people who have not been home in a long time” says Donna Callender, co-ordinator of the event. “ This is a show that all parents of Caribbean children should take them to, so they may experience what we grew up with” says Sydney Roberts , President of Jamaica Awareness.
