Congressman John Conyers to address Presidential abuse of Power Issues in Miami

MIAMI – The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida is proud to present A Conversation with Congressman John Conyers, Jr., who will discuss important and timely issues such as unlawful detention and immigration practices, use of torture, wiretapping and presidential signing statements.

The event will take place on Sunday, Nov. 4 from 4-6PM at the University of Miami’s Storer Auditorium; reservations are requested.

“This administration’s policies consistently challenge our constitutionally protected civil rights and liberties,” said Conyers. “In the last six years, we have seen threats to our freedom of movement, our freedom to be secure in conducting our private affairs, and our freedom to speak out and associate with others. We need responsible oversight and accountability for the Executive Branch and that’s what I have worked to restore in the 110th Congress.”

“A true defender of civil liberties, Conyers is a shining example that we can be both safe and free in this great country,” said Jeanne Baker, President of the ACLU of Florida.

“Rep. Conyers’ work on voting issues, fighting terrorism while protecting our rights and myriad other issues have made him a champion of civil rights for all Americans, not just those in his District.”

Rep. Conyers, in his 21st term as a U.S. Congressman, is the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and the second most senior member in the U.S. House. The House Judiciary Committee oversees the Department of Justice (including the FBI), the Federal Courts, constitutional and civil rights issues as well as others. He is also the Dean and a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus, which was formed in 1969 to address the concerns of Black and minority citizens.

“Congress must act now to end warrantless wiretapping, stop the use of torture, restore habeas corpus, and protect the rights of immigrants,” said Howard Simon, ACLU of Florida Executive Director. “Our constitution is in dire need of help – and it is American heroes like Rep. Conyers that are working hard to breathe life back into our most important document.”
