Community Blog: The Voting Rights Act Passed in 1965, not 2008

FT. LAUDERDALE – Some may be proud that many blacks came out and voted for the first time in the recent Presidential election. Others may question, “What rock have you been under?” Some are acting as if Blacks have just been given the right to vote, especially when you hear about the 100 and odd year old woman coming out to vote for the first time. I’m glad these people that voted for the first time, finally made use of their right to vote, but my question is, “Where have you been the last eight years?” If they had come out to vote, maybe we could have avoided the recent Bush deBacle.

Some may think that these voters came out for the first time because Senator Obama was running. That might be part of it, but I think they came out because of Senator Obama’s popularity. They saw history in the making, so many thought they should have a part in cementing this history making moment. Many came out because they just wanted to see the first Black President elected.

One might be tempted to ask, Did these folks also vote on the local amendments on their ballots? Did they vote for their School Board members, congressmen and Judges? Were they just caught up in the sensationalism, and not paying attention to larger concerns? More importantly,Will they continue to vote in future elections?
