Democratic National Chairman Statement on Haiti

Washington – Democratic National Chairman (DNC) Chairman Tim Kaine issued the following statement after a devastating earthquake leveled Haiti late Tuesday afternoon. The quake is estimated to be the worst to hit the region in more than 200 years.

“Today our deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers continue to be with the Haitian people.

“As President Obama said this morning, the full force and resources of the U.S. government have been deployed to Haiti to save lives, help manage the disaster and provide much needed humanitarian relief.

“The Obama Administration, especially USAID and the Departments of State and Defense, are working closely with our partners in the region to account for U.S. embassy personnel and their families and other Americans living and working in Haiti; spearhead an aggressive rescue and recovery effort; and act in a coordinated, unified way with other agencies and humanitarian organizations on the ground.

“I second the President’s ask of the American people to support the people of Haiti by contributing what they can to the urgent humanitarian effort already underway. As the extent of the tragedy continues to unfold, we will continue to stand united with the Haitian people in their hour of need.”

Americans trying to find loved ones in Haiti are encouraged to call the State Department at (888) 407-4747. To learn how to contribute to the humanitarian effort, please visit www.whitehouse.gov.
