Commentary With Winston Barnes: Remember President Richard Nixon
SOUTH FLORIDA – A caller to WAVS 1170AM Open Line show yesterday (Feb. 2nd) called on listeners to remember President Richard Nixon, at least how similar he is to the one current Presidential nomination candidate.
In part, because I have not followed the campaigns, I am not going to focus on the candidate who was born in Canada. But a look at Nixon is of some value because as the caller claims he reminds us so much of Richard Nixon, who was sometimes called “Tricky Dick”.
As the saying goes, Nixon was President when there was a break in at the democratic national headquarters office in a building called, you got it, “Watergate”. Thanks to dogged newspaper journalism, it was revealed that responsibility, if not culpability went straight to the office of the President himself.
This prompted the start of proceedings to impeach Nixon, but he resigned before those hearings began, all the while claiming he was not a crook. Our Open Line caller believes this so much reminds of the current candidate that it is downright scary.
The caller said, “it should be noted too that Nixon did some amount of good as he was the President who opened up china”, and as the saying goes, “hence the chance for the U.S. to borrow so much money from that country these days”.
