Commentary with Winston Barnes: Jamaica Depravity

DAVIE – A certain level of depravity continues to display itself in Jamaica and while horrific, should surprise very few. The lowering of standards of just plain decency has been underway for some time.

Years ago the music tended to show a deterioration of certain moral standards that manifested itself not only in the lyrical content, but also the dance and dress code that accompanied the music. Then there was the concept of the dog heart mentality and the alms house behavior.

So, why are so many of us shocked and surprised at the killing of more than sixty children since the start of the year?

Decades ago there was the concept of rent a dread that emerged fully during the years of Reggae Sunsplash in Montego Bay. Girlfriends and wives acknowledged an understanding of their dreadlocked men sleeping with foreign tourists for a money!

We should not therefore be too surprised to learn now that men are doing the same thing, nothing wrong goes the reasoning, if you sleep with my lady, as long as you let off something.

Depravity has become the norm at certain levels of the society and the so called leaders will have to assume some of the blame. If supposed leaders have made corruption the norm, they should not be surprised when those they seek to govern take that as a license to also further corrupt the society.
