Commentary With Winston Barnes: Illiteracy

DAVIE – There is a real fear that many do not share, which nonetheless is virulent at this time. The fear is based on ignorance and in some cases, illiteracy. The confusing war of words about health care has not brought any light to the issue, even though there has been a lot of heat generated.

As I have said in the past however, the Caribbean American community is not being spared this outbreak of ignorant spouting at the mouth. If there is any doubt take as an example a caller last week who claimed that it is not the tourists who built up south Florida, but people like him who came from the north and brought the area to where it is today.

As in that was not non-sensical enough, this caller claims that when he came to live in the U.S. to the Washington, D.C. area, there were only thirty seven thousand people living in the state of Florida. Other callers quickly researched and let us know that was more than a century ago.

It is not only that this caller expressed his position with so much arrogance, but that he would not change when offered a chance to do so.

I believe it is truly frightening that someone can so strongly hold on to claims that are patently untrue. But this also explains how and why some people can believe so many lies about the health care reform being proposed by the President.
