Commentary with Winston Barnes: Barack Obama

DAVIE – St. Paul’s letter to the Hebrew people centuries ago says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”, but it also goes on to say, “for by it the elders obtained good testimony”.

Upon this bastion of faith and belief these United States again proves that it could conceivably be called the greatest experiment in the affairs of human kind.

Fear and hate will never disappear as long as humans continue to be humans. Yet, as humans, we have reason to continue to hope.

Early this year, when even Black folk were still questioning the very concept of Barack Obama seeking the presidency of the U.S., my response was that if you question Barack Obama’s candidacy, you question my daughter’s dreams and aspirations. But this victory of dreams and hopes confirms that all young people in this country and this world, has reason to hope. Hope that hate and malice can be defeated. Hope that ignorance can be submerged as decency and integrity is allowed to blossom.

But it also means that the elders’ dreams have come true, as it says in the negro national anthem…

“God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, thou who has brought us thus far on the way, thou who has by thy might, led us into the light, keep us forever in the path we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our god, where we met thee, lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee, shadowed beneath thy hand, may we forever stand thru to our God true to our native land.”
